Fast facts

  • Small and tranquil seaside town
  • Set in majestic surroundings on the northern shore of Port Stephens
  • 222 km north of Sydney, population 1,200

Why go there

Hawks Nest is one of the main gateways to Myall Lakes National Park, a network of interconnected lakes and rivers that is one of the most popular houseboating destinations in the country. These lakes are also superbly equipped for recreational boating and fishing.

The tranquillity of this particular region and its proximity to many outstanding natural attractions has made it a favourite holiday destination for those wishing to escape city and suburban stress. Many holiday regulars return here year after year.

The small township of Tea Gardens, on the Myall River at the southern end of Myall Lakes, is a perfect base from which to explore the surrounding waterways.

History

The first Europeans to settle in the area were timber cutters. For much of its history, the local economy has relied on seafood and timber.

Once a bridge was built across the mouth of the Myall River in 1974, Hawks Nest developed as a holiday destination.

Things to do

Look for koalas in the reserve along Kingfisher Avenue.

Walk to the top of Yacaaba Head, which guards the northern approach to Port Stephens – but be prepared for a tough climb.

Events

  • The Myall Prawn Festival, in March, features the World Prawn Eating Championship, boat races, sand modelling, a tug-of-war, an art exhibition and sale, stalls – and heaps of prawns.

Don’t miss

  • Fishing in the lakes, the bay or out in the ocean.
  • Bird-watching on Myall Lakes.
  • A long stroll on majestic Hawks Nest Beach.
  • Mungo Brush Road through Myall Lakes National Park.
  • The ferry to Nelson Bay – and watch for dolphins.
